LINE OF RESEARCH 1:
PREPARATION OF SCIENCES TEACHERS
Discusses the initial and continued preparation of Sciences teachers from the analysis of the syllabus and historical review, as well as the processes to publicise and popularise the Sciences, as involved in this process to qualify and prepare teachers.
Associated Research Projects:
1.1 SCIENTIFIC PUBLICISING IN THE PREPARATION OF SCIENCES TEACHERS
Investigates the presence of the activity of teaching Sciences as carried out in ofrmal and non-formal spaces, especially in the Sciences Centres and Museums, and dedicated to the process to produce and publicise scientific knowledge, as well as assessing the process of popularisation of the Sciences during the early stages of qualification and the continued qualification process as provided to Sciences teachers.
1.2 PREPARATION OF TEACHERS FOR THE TEACHING OF SCIENCES
Studies the actions in the teaching of Sciences as carried out in formal teaching spaces, with a focus on the aspects of the inital qualification and continued education as offered to Sciences teachers.
LINE OF RESEARCH 2:
REFLECTIONS ON THE TEACHING OF SCIENCES IN MODERN TIMES
Studies the present-day challenges in the Teaching of Sciences, discussing both the theories and the application in Basic and University/College education, as well as the contents of the domain it is inserted in: the teaching activity; the new frontiers and the production of research and theories; the use of new procedures and technologies; new pedagogical practices; public policies; the elements of inclusion and exclusion; inter and trans-discipline character; the sociological, philosophical and epistemological challenges.
Associated Research Projects:
2.1 INNOVATIVE ASPECTS OF THE TEACHING OF SCIENCES
Studies the most recent and potentially innovative aspects found in the Teaching of
Sciences. Seeks the latest content as produced in the domain of the Sciences with the aim of apply them in the Teaching and Learning of Sciences as well as in relation to public policies.
2.2 THE HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY AND SOCIOLOGY OF SCIENCE
Studies the existing relations between Human Sciences and Philosophy with the domain of the Sciences, chiefly as it concerns the educational aspect but also as related to the inter-disciplary contentss and their epistemological implications.
Considers both the historical process of this relation as the challenges of present times.
Disciplines in the PROPEC are organised into three categories (mandatory, course-specific and optional) that are distributed in the common core discipline core of Sciences or in the specific Sciences teaching core, apart from the disciplines of the research and extension domain that cater to the production of MSc theses. Table 1 below shows the minimum total credits to be taken according to the course and the status of disciplines.
